Gymtimidation

Have you ever gone to the gym and felt nervous to work out? Worried what others are thinking about you? Worried that people think you are too fat to be at the gym or that the exercises you are doing are stupid?

Let me tell you, I have been going to the gym for years and I still feel that way sometimes. Don’t believe me? Here are a few examples:

1. When I first got pregnant at that awkward stage between “she’s obviously pregnant” and “Is that a food baby?” I worried that the other gym-goers would think I had just let myself go.

2. I felt that same way when I was coming back to working out after having my son.

3. When I attempt a new exercise or a machine I haven’t tried before. I worry that others will think I am incompetent. This hits especially hard since I am a trainer and I want others to see that I know what I am doing.

 

If I feel this way as an exercise professional, I am sure my clients feel the same way. Trying something new is intimidating. Especially when it involves putting yourself out there in front of a bunch of people.

The good news is that most of the people around you could care less about what you are doing (in a good way). Most people are too involved with themselves to really worry about others. It just takes making that mental leap and getting over your own fears.

Here are a few things that have helped me make that leap in order to make gains in the gym despite the situation.

1. Get a trainer- Having someone to help you navigate your environment and connect you with other fit people.

2. Bring a friend- Having a buddy can be very motivating and make the gym less intimidating. Just make sure you friend is a force of positivity.

3. Have a plan- It’s easy to leave early or give up on certain exercises if you don’t have a written plan. Having a plan helps give you confidence and feel like you belong. Make sure you know the exercises and

4. Dress the part- Never underestimate the power of a cute outfit. If you feel good and look good you will be more motivated to keep going.

5. Turn up your tunes- Put on headphones and blast your favorite music. It’s easier to be in your own little world that way.

    I got this way after my last show. I felt like people were judging me and looking up to me as an example and I just pushed away from it all and now that I’m working on building muscle again I feel like I have a lot of strength I need to get back and again…I’m worried about what other people think. Ugh!

    Yes! Good point I think that is something a lot of competitors struggle with after a competition– you get all those complements from those around you but it is impossible to maintain that level of leanness and you don’t want to let anyone down. I told my clients when I was “bulking” so they could understand that maintaing that level of leanness wasn’t sustainable and wasn’t my goal.

    This is so true! Thank you for bringing up this point. Most people are truly only focused on their workout. I have to admit, I was scared to start using the weight room, especially the smith machine because I didnt know how much weight to use or if my form was good enough. Thank God I finally jumped in and started squatting! Fear is a dirty liar, just get in and try!
